Great Bend’s Sophia Bauer Dominates at Kearney Wrestling Meet

Sophia Bauer from Great Bend showcased her wrestling prowess by securing a first-place finish at the Kearney Wrestling Meet held in March 2024. Competing in the girls’ 100-pound category, Bauer achieved an impressive series of victories, culminating in a decisive 17-0 win against Corzo from Lexington. Her performance stood out in a highly competitive field, demonstrating her skill and determination.

Bauer’s journey through the tournament included notable matches against several opponents. She defeated Brecks from North Platte in just 31 seconds and followed up with a victory over Nguyen from Lincoln East in 38 seconds. Bauer continued her winning streak, overcoming Quintana from Lincoln in 2 minutes and 46 seconds, before finishing her tournament run with a swift 1 minute and 13 seconds match against Perez from Grand Island.

In addition to Bauer’s triumph, her teammate Keira Leyva also made a mark in the tournament within the girls’ 105-pound category. Leyva claimed victories against Gonzalez from Grand Island and Marfileno from Kearney, but ultimately fell to Lauren Frihauf from Seward, who secured first place after a 59-second match.

Strong Performances Across Categories

The Kearney Wrestling Meet featured strong performances from several other athletes as well. In the girls’ 110-pound division, Camdyn Post demonstrated her capabilities, securing wins against Karjalainen from Kearney and Ross from Bellevue before facing Addi Gates from Grand Island, who ultimately took the title with an 11-6 victory.

Kayle Baldwin, wrestling in the 115-pound category, had a challenging tournament. After initial wins against Segelke from Minden and Cortez from Grand Island, Baldwin faced Harris from Lincoln Southwest, who took the match in just over a minute. Baldwin managed to secure a fifth-place finish against Carle from Scottsbluff, winning in 1 minute and 48 seconds.

The competition also highlighted Brooklynn Kelly’s efforts in the 125-pound category, where she achieved wins against Gross from Bellevue and Corner from Seward. Despite these successes, she ultimately lost to Abbey from Kearney, who claimed the match after 4 minutes and 24 seconds.

Micah Ellegood, competing in the 130-pound category, secured victories against Ruben from Lincoln Southeast and Haneborg from North Platte, but faced defeats in later rounds, finishing his tournament with a fifth-place match loss to Diaz from Lexington.
