O’Dowd Clinches 5-AA NorCal Title with Thrilling 23-20 Victory
UPDATE: Bishop O’Dowd has just secured the CIF 5-AA NorCal title with a nail-biting 23-20 victory over Chico, showcasing a gripping performance on the road in Chico on October 27, 2023.
The Dragons, who traveled nearly three hours for this championship clash, faced a fierce battle but emerged victorious thanks to a late-game defensive stand. With just 90 seconds left on the clock, O’Dowd’s defense swarmed Chico quarterback John Bernardez, sealing the game with a crucial fourth-down sack.
This win marks a significant moment for O’Dowd, echoing the 2016 team’s success in the same classification. The Dragons (10-4) are now set to chase their second state championship next week against Christian-El Cajon in Southern California.
Junior running back Lamar Ellis was a standout performer, scoring two touchdowns, including a spectacular run that electrified the crowd. “Ellis followed his blockers, found daylight down the sideline, and weaved through defenders for a touchdown that stretched the margin to 23-14,” said a team spokesperson.
O’Dowd started strong with Ellis scoring a 17-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, giving them a 6-0 lead. However, Chico quickly responded with a touchdown pass to Jake Detmer, taking the lead 7-6 after a successful PAT.
The game saw dramatic shifts in momentum. O’Dowd regained the lead with a 24-yard field goal just before halftime, ending the second quarter at 9-7 in their favor.
Chico answered back in the second half with a touchdown, pushing ahead to 14-9. But O’Dowd’s Trevor Erickson ignited the spirit of the team with a stunning 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, quickly flipping the lead back to 16-14.
As the fourth quarter progressed, Chico fumbled at the 1-yard line, allowing O’Dowd to maintain its slim lead. The tension escalated until Bernardez managed to score again for Chico, narrowing the gap to 23-20 with just over five minutes remaining.
With time running out, the stakes were high. O’Dowd’s defense held firm, shutting down Chico’s final drive and securing the victory as the crowd erupted in celebration.
Next week, O’Dowd aims to replicate their past glory as they prepare for the state championship showdown. Fans and alumni are encouraged to rally behind the team as they embark on this crucial journey.
This thrilling victory not only cements O’Dowd’s place in NorCal football history but also sets the stage for an exciting clash in the upcoming state finals. Stay tuned for more updates as the Dragons aim for championship glory!
