U.S. Space Force Trainees to Showcase New Dress Uniform at Graduation
A group of recruits from the U.S. Space Force will be the first to wear the service’s new dress uniform during their graduation ceremony on December 18, 2023. This event marks a significant milestone, as these trainees are set to don the new attire for the first time following a fitting at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, on November 19, 2023.
The development of the new dress uniform has taken four years, during which early prototypes were crafted, and feedback from service members was incorporated. The uniform features a dark blue jacket adorned with diagonal silver buttons, a matching tie, grey pants, and a colored shirt. This design aims to blend the heritage of the service with a modern aesthetic that reflects both unity and mission.
In a statement regarding the uniform’s rollout, Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman emphasized the importance of input from guardians during the design process. “Our service dress uniform represents the unique identity of guardians,” he stated, adding, “I know the force will wear it with pride.”
Phased Rollout of the New Uniform
The new uniform is part of a phased rollout plan, which will begin in late 2025 and continue into 2026. Initial orders will be available to select groups, including recruiters and training instructors. Those stationed in the national capital region are expected to receive their uniforms by mid-December 2023.
While guardians are not yet required to order the new uniform, a mandatory-wear date will be established once it is widely accessible. According to the Space Force, service members stationed near military clothing sales stores will have the opportunity to order their uniforms between November and December 2023, with deliveries expected by June 2026.
For those without access to physical stores, online ordering options will become available in January 2026, also with a June 2026 delivery timeline. Chief Master Sergeant John Bentivegna highlighted that this phased approach is designed to prioritize the needs of guardians. “It allows us to proactively address potential challenges in production and distribution while also providing guardians with ample time to acquire the new uniform,” he noted.
The Space Force plans to offer guardians at least 12 months’ notice to order the new uniform and prepare for the mandatory-wear date. This initiative aims to ensure a smooth transition as the service embraces its new identity through its updated dress attire.
