‘Yunan’ Triumphs at Arab Critics’ Awards for European Films

Ameer Fakher Eldin’s film, Yunan, has been awarded the prestigious Arab Critics’ Awards for European Films, announced during the El Gouna Film Festival on October 18, 2023. This marks the seventh edition of the awards, which are organized by European Film Promotion (EFP) in collaboration with the Arab Cinema Center (ACC).

Set against the backdrop of a remote North Sea island, Yunan tells the story of an exiled Syrian writer, portrayed by Lebanese actor Georges Khabbaz, who arrives with the intention of ending his life. The narrative unfolds as he interacts with the island’s inhabitants, including his landlady, played by German film icon Hanna Schygulla, whose warmth and gruff demeanor change his perspective on life. The film had its world premiere in competition at this year’s Berlinale, showcasing Fakher Eldin’s evolving craft as a filmmaker.

The director, currently unable to attend the ceremony, expressed his gratitude through a video message to the jury. Accepting the award on his behalf was Dorothe Beinemeier, producer at Red Balloon Film, which co-produced the film alongside Microclimat Film and Intramovies. Additional support came from co-producers Fresco Films, Metafora Productions, and Tabi360. Distribution rights in the MENA region are handled by Mad Solutions, while Intramovies manages world sales.

Promoting European Cinema in the Arab World

The Arab Critics’ Awards for European Films were initiated in 2019 to bolster the presence of European cinema in the Arab market and to foster relationships between Arab film critics and European filmmakers. The initiative has seen a range of notable winners over the years, including films such as God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya in 2019, Undine in 2020, and Fallen Leaves in 2023.

Supported by Creative Europe, the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, the awards aim to enhance the visibility of diverse European narratives in the Arab world. By recognizing films like Yunan, the initiative not only celebrates artistic achievements but also highlights the cultural exchange that cinema can inspire across borders.
