Wim Wenders to Lead Jury at 76th Berlin International Film Festival
The Berlin International Film Festival has announced that acclaimed German director Wim Wenders will serve as the president of the international jury for its 76th edition, scheduled to take place in February 2026. Wenders, known for his influential works such as Pina and The American Friend, has maintained a long-standing relationship with the festival, showcasing his films and receiving accolades over the years.
Wenders’ connection to the Berlin International Film Festival dates back decades. His documentary about choreographer Pina Bausch opened the festival in 2011, while his film The Million Dollar Hotel, featuring Mel Gibson, was part of the 2000 lineup. In 2015, Wenders received the festival’s prestigious Honorary Golden Bear and celebrated the screening of a restored version of The American Friend. At that time, former festival director Dieter Kosslick praised Wenders as a filmmaker whose “cross-genre and multifaceted work” has significantly influenced cinema.
Current festival director Tricia Tuttle expressed enthusiasm for Wenders’ role as jury president, noting his “insatiable curiosity and deep mastery of film language.” She remarked, “His work continues to inspire other filmmakers, and we are proud to celebrate this homegrown polymath.”
In a statement, Wenders shared his surprise at being chosen for the position, stating, “It never hit me to even remotely think about being jury president in my hometown. Until Tricia Tuttle asked me. And then I realized: Wow! That’ll be a whole new way to see films at the Berlinale.” He looks forward to engaging with the films in competition and sharing insights with fellow jury members who share his passion for cinema.
With Wenders at the helm of the jury, the festival anticipates a rich exploration of the films presented this year. The Berlinale, renowned for its diverse selection of films and commitment to artistic excellence, promises a captivating experience for both filmmakers and audiences alike.
