Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to attend the inaugural summit of the Board of Peace in the United States on February 19, 2024. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his participation, highlighting the government’s commitment to actively contribute to the board’s direction and operations from the outset.

According to Yvonne Mewengkang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “The government has received an invitation for the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, and President Prabowo Subianto will attend in person.” This summit marks a significant step for Indonesia as it seeks to leverage the platform to prioritize the protection of civilians in the Gaza Strip.

Indonesia’s Commitment to Palestinian Welfare

Yvonne Mewengkang elaborated that Indonesia aims to use the Board of Peace to advocate for the welfare of Gaza’s population. “Indonesia will use the Board of Peace to fight for civilian protection, promote recovery and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, and pursue a fair and sustainable peace for Palestine based on a two-state solution,” she stated.

The Board of Peace is an initiative spearheaded by the United States under former President Donald Trump. The summit is expected to facilitate discussions on reconstruction in Gaza and the necessary commitments for aid. Last week, US officials announced that Trump would lead the Board of Peace summit at the US Institute of Peace in Washington.

Currently, the Board of Peace comprises 26 member nations, including Indonesia and Israel. It is intended to play a crucial role in implementing Trump’s proposals aimed at ending aggression in Gaza. Furthermore, the board will oversee a transitional government in Gaza, ensuring accountability during this pivotal period.

Concerns Over Global Implications

In a separate statement, Trump mentioned that the board might be expanded to address other global conflicts. However, this prospect raises concerns among experts who fear that such an initiative could undermine the role of the United Nations. Critics argue that Trump’s oversight of the board resembles a colonial structure, managing foreign affairs without adequate international cooperation.

The upcoming summit not only showcases Indonesia’s active role on the global stage but also reflects the complexities surrounding peace initiatives in the Middle East. As the world watches, the outcomes of this meeting could significantly influence future diplomatic relations and humanitarian efforts in the region.
