Lithuania Plans Indefinite Closure of Belarus Border Crossings
Lithuania’s government has announced plans to close its border crossings with Belarus indefinitely. This decision follows repeated disruptions at Vilnius Airport, where air traffic was halted due to suspected sightings of balloons allegedly used for smuggling cigarettes. The disturbances occurred over three consecutive evenings—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—prompting the cancellation of flights and delays for travelers.
The situation escalated on the evening of March 15, 2024, when the Lithuanian National Security Commission convened to address the security risks posed by these balloon sightings. Notably, the airport in Kaunas, situated further from the border, experienced similar disruptions. Each balloon incident led to temporary closures of Lithuania’s border crossings at Medininkai and Šalčininkai for several hours.
Following these incidents, Lithuania’s border guard service implemented a 24-hour closure of the border, as reported by the BNS news agency. Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stated that the restrictions would remain in effect until Wednesday, when her Cabinet is expected to consider the possibility of an indefinite closure. She confirmed that a draft decision to permanently shut the border has already been prepared, allowing exemptions for diplomats and diplomatic mail. Citizens of Lithuania and other European Union countries would still have access to enter from Belarus.
Lithuania, a member of both the EU and NATO, is situated on the eastern flank of the Western alliance, bordering Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus, an ally of Russia. The ongoing tensions have drawn comments from Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who resides in exile in Lithuania. In statements to the Associated Press, she described the balloon incidents as “yet another sign that the regime is using cigarette smuggling as a tool of hybrid aggression against Europe.”
Tsikhanouskaya expressed her support for Lithuania’s actions, declaring that the closure of border crossings is a logical measure to enhance national security. She also advocated for stronger sanctions against those involved in the smuggling operations.
The Lithuanian government’s decision reflects broader concerns regarding security and smuggling activities at its borders. The situation continues to evolve as officials assess the implications of these measures for both national safety and regional relations.
