Landslide in Kenya Claims 26 Lives; Search Efforts Halted by Floods

A devastating landslide in western Kenya has resulted in at least 26 fatalities, with recovery efforts hampered by severe flooding in the area. On Sunday, rescue teams retrieved four additional bodies, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to this tragic figure. The landslide occurred on March 10, 2024, in the Chesongoch region of the Rift Valley, where heavy rains have led to numerous landslides and flooding.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen announced that 25 individuals remain unaccounted for. In response, the government has intensified search operations, deploying military resources including four aircraft to access regions that have become isolated due to washed-out roads. Unfortunately, efforts to locate survivors were suspended on Sunday after flash floods swept through the area, creating unsafe conditions for search teams.

The persistent heavy rains have caused widespread flooding across multiple counties in Kenya, displacing thousands of residents. In light of this, the government has urged individuals living in flood or landslide-prone regions to evacuate for their safety. Minister Murkomen confirmed that the administration will continue to deliver essential supplies to affected communities, including airlifting resources to 15 schools that remain cut off. Furthermore, he stated that ongoing national examination papers would also be transported to candidates.

In addressing the human toll of the disaster, Murkomen expressed deep sorrow for the families affected, noting that some have lost as many as five to six immediate family members. The government has committed to covering medical expenses for over 30 injured individuals and resettling numerous families who have lost their homes.

Oscar Okum, regional manager for the Kenya Red Cross, emphasized the ongoing risk in the Rift Valley, stating, “While conducting search and recovery operations, we have witnessed areas that were previously cleared being re-affected by mudslides.” He urged local residents to seek safer ground to protect their lives and livelihoods amid the continuing threat of landslides.

As rain continues to lash the region, communities remain on high alert. The government’s proactive measures aim to mitigate the impact of this natural disaster, ensuring that those affected receive the necessary support and resources during this challenging time.
