Ex-Aides Accuse Prince Andrew of Misusing Public Funds for Personal Expenses
Allegations regarding Prince Andrew’s financial conduct during his tenure as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy have intensified, with former civil servants alleging improper use of taxpayer funds for personal expenses, including massage services. These claims surfaced following an investigation into Andrew’s activities, prompting scrutiny into his spending habits and connections to controversial figures.
Former Officials Speak Out
According to Fox News, one former civil servant who worked in the trade department recounted his disapproval of a payment linked to “massage services.” Speaking anonymously to the BBC, he stated, “I thought it was wrong… I’d said we mustn’t pay it, but we ended up paying it anyway.” This official revealed that despite his refusal to authorize the payment, senior staff overruled him. Reflecting on the incident, he expressed regret at not having pushed harder to contest the expense, stating, “I can’t say it would have stopped him, but we should have flagged that something was wrong.”
A second former official from Whitehall described a pattern of extravagant spending associated with Andrew’s official travel. This source claimed there were frequent first-class flights, multiple hotel rooms, and accommodations for a large entourage. “I couldn’t believe it… it was like it wasn’t real money; they weren’t spending any of their own money,” he remarked. The official highlighted that oversight was lacking, with expenditures often receiving approval without thorough review, characterizing Andrew’s claims as receiving a “rubber stamp.”
Investigation Expands
The allegations arose shortly after Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, a brief detainment lasting approximately ten hours. He was later photographed returning to Wood Farm, where he has been residing following his departure from Royal Lodge.
Further complicating matters, the investigation also examines claims that Andrew shared confidential trade information with Jeffrey Epstein. Emails released by the U.S. Department of Justice indicate that Andrew forwarded reports from official trips, including visits to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore. One email from November 2010 was allegedly forwarded within minutes of receipt, while another sent on Christmas Eve included a confidential briefing on investment opportunities related to the reconstruction of Helmand Province in Afghanistan.
Law enforcement agencies across the U.K. are now investigating additional aspects of Andrew’s ties to Epstein. The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is reviewing allegations that London airports may have been involved in human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
The accumulation of claims concerning travel expenses and the sharing of official information has heightened scrutiny surrounding Andrew’s role as trade envoy. As the investigation continues, further revelations may emerge about the implications of his conduct during this period.
