Canada Mandates Salmonella Testing for Iranian Pistachios
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has mandated that all pistachios imported from Iran undergo testing for Salmonella in response to a nationwide outbreak. This decision follows a troubling report from the Public Health Agency of Canada, which confirmed 155 laboratory-confirmed Salmonella infections linked to the consumption of pistachios and related products. Victims of the outbreak range in age from 1 to 95 years, and 24 individuals have required hospitalization.
As of December 1, 2023, the CFIA reported that the number of recalled pistachio products associated with Salmonella contamination has surged to 133 items. Consumers can find the complete list of these recalled products on the CFIA’s food recall warning page. The agency initially imposed a ban on pistachio imports from Iran on September 27, 2023, and the new testing requirement will apply to all federally licensed importers and manufacturers.
Under the new regulations, any pistachios imported from Iran before the ban must be held and tested for Salmonella before they can be sold. This requirement also extends to products made with Iranian pistachios that are not already part of the recall. The CFIA stated, “This will help protect Canadians from illness and provide consumers with greater reassurance that what they are buying is safe.”
Ongoing Food Safety Measures
The CFIA emphasized that these measures are part of the conditions necessary for businesses holding a Safe Food for Canadians license. The testing protocol will remain in effect throughout the ongoing food safety investigation. The agency also indicated that it will continue conducting inspection activities to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
Failure to meet federal requirements could result in enforcement actions against importers and manufacturers. Possible penalties include administrative monetary fines, suspension or cancellation of licenses, or legal prosecution.
As the investigation continues, the CFIA remains committed to safeguarding public health and ensuring that food products available to Canadians meet strict safety standards. This initiative underscores the importance of vigilance in food safety, especially in light of the current outbreak linked to pistachios. The CFIA encourages consumers to stay informed and check for recalls to protect themselves and their families.
