Arctic Air Hits U.S. as Pacific Northwest Faces Severe Flooding

A significant surge of Arctic air is moving south from Canada, impacting parts of the northern United States, while residents of the Pacific Northwest remain on high alert for potential mudslides and levee failures following severe flooding. The flooding, triggered by an unusually strong atmospheric river, has led to the evacuation of thousands of individuals, including Eddie Wicks and his wife, who reside on a farm near the Snoqualmie River in Washington state.

As floodwaters rapidly encroached on their property, Wicks and his wife worked to move their animals to higher ground. The situation escalated quickly, culminating in a dramatic rescue by the King County Sheriff’s Office marine rescue dive unit, who transported the couple and their dog across what had become a lake.

Severe Flooding in Washington State

The flooding has wreaked havoc across the region, with reports indicating that some areas received over a foot (30 centimeters) of rain. In Snohomish County, located north of Seattle, emergency officials, alongside federal, state, and local representatives, assessed the damage. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson described the recovery as “challenging” and “expensive,” emphasizing the extensive effort required to assist affected communities.

“It’s obvious that thousands and thousands of Washingtonians are in the process of digging out, and that’s going to be a challenging process,” Ferguson stated. “It’s going to be time-consuming, and it’s going to be potentially dangerous at times.”

At the height of the evacuation efforts, around 170 horses, 140 chickens, and 90 goats found refuge at a county park north of Seattle, according to Kara Underwood, division manager of Snohomish County Parks. As of Saturday, many of these animals were still being cared for at the park.

Authorities have warned that while floodwaters are slowly receding, they will remain elevated for several days, increasing the risk of mudslides and levee failures. The forecast also threatens more rainfall on Sunday, which could exacerbate already precarious conditions.

Arctic Air and Dangerous Wind Chills Sweep the Midwest

As the Pacific Northwest grapples with the aftermath of the flooding, an Arctic air mass has plunged temperatures across the Upper Midwest. On Saturday morning, Grand Forks, North Dakota, recorded temperatures of minus 12 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 24 degrees Celsius), with wind chill values making it feel like minus 33 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 36 degrees Celsius), as reported by the National Weather Service.

Major cities including Minneapolis and Chicago are bracing for plunging temperatures, with lows expected to reach minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 26 degrees Celsius) and around 1 degree Fahrenheit (minus 17 degrees Celsius) respectively by early Sunday morning. The National Weather Service has issued cold weather advisories extending as far south as Montgomery, Alabama, where temperatures may fall to around 22 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 6 degrees Celsius) late Sunday night.

This Arctic air system will continue to progress south and east into Southern states, raising concerns about public safety and health as the cold weather settles in.

As communities in the Pacific Northwest continue to recover from the flooding, the dual threat of severe weather conditions across the U.S. highlights the ongoing challenges posed by extreme weather events. As rescue and recovery efforts unfold, local officials remain vigilant, preparing for the consequences of both the flooding and the ensuing cold snap.
