Winter Sports Surge: Broomfield, Centaurus Lead Front Range
BREAKING: The winter sports season kicks off with explosive performances across the Front Range, as teams and athletes showcase their skills in the opening week of competition. Broomfield and Centaurus lead the charge, with standout athletes making headlines.
UPDATE: Broomfield girls basketball opened their season with an impressive 2-0 record, defeating both Rock Canyon and Denver East by double digits. Sophomore sensation Reece Gilpatrick is averaging a remarkable 20 points on 65% shooting, signaling her potential as a key player this season.
In swimming, Broomfield’s girls team triumphed at the 12-team Legacy Invite held at Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center, with standout performances from Kamryn Wimmer, who clinched victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and 50 freestyle. Additionally, Myra Wherry posted the top time in 4A for the 100 freestyle at 55.22, helping her team secure the fastest time in the 200 free relay.
Meanwhile, the Centaurus boys basketball team remains undefeated at 3-0, with senior Nick Jones leading the way, averaging 12.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. They have also claimed victories against Peak to Peak, Ponderosa, and Northridge.
The Dawson girls basketball team started strong under new coach Mike Blakely, achieving their first win by outscoring Rocky Mountain Lutheran in a thrilling fourth quarter, 13-3.
At Fairview, both the boys and girls basketball teams are making waves. The girls (2-0) achieved decisive wins against Prairie View and Lakewood, with Chloe Hickory scoring 28 points in the first two games. The boys’ team (1-0) secured a narrow victory over Prairie View, led by Trevor Ochs with 23 points.
Highlighting the Frederick girls basketball team, they stand at 4-0, confidently navigating the season despite losing four top scorers from last year. They have achieved wins over Loveland, Eaton, St. Mary’s, and Delta.
In individual performances, Veronika Hafer from Holy Family girls wrestling won the 110-pound weight class title at the Greeley West Tournament, showcasing her determination and skill.
The Legacy girls swimming team is also making headlines with Eve Nordgren winning both the 100-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke at the Legacy Invite, demonstrating her prowess in the pool.
As the season progresses, eyes are on Caleb Schott from Holy Family boys basketball, who scored 22 points in a commanding win over Colorado Academy, affirming his role as a key player to watch.
