UPDATE: The V Foundation for Cancer Research has just raised a record-breaking $3.1 million at its 10th annual “Boo-Yah” gala in New York City on October 25, 2023. This landmark event, honoring the legacy of former ESPN anchor Stuart Scott, underscores the ongoing fight against cancer and the impact of his inspiring story.

The gala coincided with the premiere of “Boo-Yah: A Portrait of Stuart Scott,” a new 30 for 30 film that chronicles Scott’s battle with cancer, highlighting his resilience and influence as a public figure. Director Andre Gaines remarked,

“He was forced to fight it and in such a public way… to be an inspiration for so many other folks.”

The V Foundation, co-founded by ESPN, has now raised over $400 million for cancer research, a testament to Scott’s enduring impact. ESPN Chairman James Pitaro emphasized,

“The V Foundation is a huge part of who we are at ESPN… our ability to contribute, pay it forward.”

In a heartfelt moment, Randy Moss, Pro Football Hall of Famer and cancer survivor, accepted the inaugural Stuart Scott Impact Award. He credited Scott’s legacy for paving the way for people of color in media, stating,

“I’m able to be myself on national television because Stuart Scott broke all the barriers.”

The event was attended by Scott’s sister, Susan Scott, and their 90-year-old mother, Jackie Scott, who celebrated not only the gala but also the film’s debut. Susan Scott assured attendees that 100% of every dollar raised goes directly to funding cancer research, stating,

“We have a science advisory committee that is second to none.”

As the V Foundation gears up for future initiatives, the emotional resonance of Scott’s story continues to inspire donations and awareness. This gala marks a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against cancer, reminding us of the power of community and the relentless spirit of those fighting the disease.
