Urgent Warning: COVID-19 Vaccinations Drop as Flu Season Peaks

UPDATE: New York’s top health official has issued an urgent warning regarding a significant drop in COVID-19 vaccinations as flu season intensifies. Dr. Jim McDonald, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, revealed startling statistics: for every individual hospitalized due to the flu, there are three hospitalized for COVID-19.

With the holiday season approaching, Dr. McDonald stressed the need for New Yorkers to take precautions. “When I look at our vaccine numbers for flu across the state, they’re about the same as last year,” he said. “However, for COVID-19 vaccinations, we’re about 30% less than last year. That concerns me.” As of November 26, 2025, upstate New York counties report vaccination rates ranging from 20% to 30% for flu and only 6% to 10% for COVID-19.

Dr. McDonald emphasized that the risk of illness increases with holiday gatherings, stating, “As you look through the holiday season, we do gather more, that’s great, but you’re around more people. You spread germs more effectively inside. If you get that COVID and flu vaccine, you’re going to be in better shape.”

As health officials urge vaccinations, the potential for widespread illness during the busy holiday season looms large. Dr. Danielle Wales from the Albany Med Health System adds to the conversation, recommending that individuals consult their doctors before trying any over-the-counter immunity boosters. “It’s important to know that supplements don’t actually treat the illness,” she cautioned. “You should reach out to your doctor if you get sick, especially if you have a major illness.”

The combination of declining vaccination rates and increased social interactions this winter could lead to a surge in COVID-19 and flu cases. Health authorities are urging all residents to prioritize their vaccinations, citing the critical link between increased vaccination and reduced hospitalization rates. The time to act is now—protect yourself and your loved ones as the holiday season approaches.

As developments unfold, stay informed and consider getting vaccinated if you haven’t already. The health of our communities depends on each individual’s commitment to preventing the spread of these viruses.
