Urgent Update: 77-Year-Old Driver Hits Protester, Flees Scene
URGENT UPDATE: A 77-year-old man is under scrutiny after allegedly striking a protester with his pickup truck during a nationwide demonstration against former President Donald Trump in Jackson Township, Ohio. The incident, which occurred on July 15, 2023, involved the driver veering off the road and hitting a 53-year-old woman participating in the protest, then fleeing the scene.
Witnesses reported that thousands of demonstrators gathered near North Park as part of a larger movement involving over 7 million people across the U.S. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries, including a potential broken leg, according to officials.
The man, who remained unnamed as he has not been charged, claimed to the Canton Repository that the crash was unintentional and that he “didn’t even see those people.” He insisted he received a “total thumbs-up” from the police, suggesting that authorities had absolved him of any wrongdoing. However, Jackson Township Police Chief Mark J. Brink refuted this claim, stating that no such conversation had taken place.
“We are consulting with the Massillon City Prosecutor’s Office regarding potential charges,” Chief Brink confirmed, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. The driver expressed regret, stating, “I hope I didn’t hurt anybody bad or anything like that.”
Demonstrator Lorraine Wilburn, who captured a photo of the truck’s license plate as it sped away, voiced her concerns about the nature of the incident. “It was definitely on purpose,” she said, highlighting the dangerous maneuver as the truck mounted the curb and struck the protester directly.
As authorities continue to investigate this alarming incident, the community remains on edge. Witnesses are encouraged to come forward with any additional information. The driver remains uncharged as of now, but developments are expected as the police probe unfolds.
