Urgent Update: 19-Year-Old Shot by Deputies in Wilsonville
BREAKING: A 19-year-old man has been shot by Clackamas County deputies in Wilsonville, Oregon, after allegedly charging at them with an axe. The incident occurred late Friday night, December 5, 2023, during a response to a reported domestic disturbance.
According to officials, deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, working in conjunction with the Wilsonville Police Department, arrived at the scene near Southwest Stafford Road and Southwest 65th Avenue. There, they encountered Matthew Evan Cabril, who reportedly exited a vehicle while brandishing an axe over his head and running toward the officers.
This alarming confrontation was captured on bodycam and dashcam footage, although the videos have not yet been publicly released. In response to Cabril’s actions, deputies Madison Stefanovich and Nathan Banfi each fired their weapons, striking Cabril three times.
Emergency medical responders from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue arrived quickly on the scene. Deputies performed lifesaving measures until paramedics took over. Cabril was transported to OHSU and is currently reported to be in critical condition.
Both deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure following such incidents. The Clackamas County district attorney’s office stated that the situation will be reviewed by a Clackamas County Grand Jury to evaluate the use of deadly force.
“Pursuant to Clackamas County Critical Incident protocol, this matter will be submitted to a Clackamas County Grand Jury for an evaluation of the use of deadly physical force,” the DA’s office noted.
The investigation is being led by the Lake Oswego and West Linn Police Departments, in collaboration with the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team. Officials have indicated that more information will be available after the grand jury proceedings are completed.
This incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement and the critical nature of domestic disturbance calls. As the investigation unfolds, the community remains on alert for updates regarding Cabril’s condition and the outcomes of the inquiry into the deputies’ actions.
