Urgent Hazmat Response in Evanston After Distressed Woman Found
UPDATE: An urgent hazardous materials response was initiated in Evanston after a woman was found in distress near an unknown substance on Friday morning. The incident unfolded at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Care, located at 1406 Chicago Ave., prompting police and fire personnel to quickly close a section of Chicago Avenue for safety.
First responders arrived at the facility, which serves individuals with chronic mental health conditions, and discovered the resident “conscious but with altered mental status.” Authorities transported her to a hospital for treatment, but as they assessed the situation, they encountered a suspicious substance in her room. At 10:12 a.m., officials requested a hazardous materials response to investigate further.
The Evanston Fire Department swiftly isolated the substance, which was also located in a fanny pack belonging to the resident. Initial evaluations indicated that the material did not pose a threat to the public, according to a statement from Jessie Mayo, a spokesperson for the City of Evanston. Evidence technicians have collected the substance and it will be sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for narcotics analysis.
“This incident is isolated,” Mayo confirmed, emphasizing that all safety protocols were followed. “They just wanted to be extra cautious.” The Evanston Police Department led the response, receiving assistance from the Fire Department and regional hazardous materials teams.
During this operation, Chicago Avenue was temporarily closed between Dempster Street and Lake Street to ensure the safety of the public and facilitate the investigation.
As of now, the nature of the substance remains undetermined, but officials are prioritizing public safety and thorough testing. The community is urged to stay informed as this situation develops.
Residents of Evanston and nearby areas are advised to remain vigilant and report any concerns to local authorities. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
