Urgent Flood Watch Issued as Sierra Snowpack Boosts Farmers’ Hope

UPDATE: Central California is bracing for a significant winter storm this weekend, with a flood watch already in effect for the Sierra foothills. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Hanford have confirmed that a new system will bring widespread precipitation starting Saturday, January 20, 2024. The flood watch is active from Friday evening through Monday afternoon, with predictions of over 2 inches of rain in some northern foothill areas over the next 72 hours.

As farmers in the region harvest their citrus and vegetable crops, the accuracy of weather forecasts is vital. “Overall, we typically know at least a week out what’s coming, which puts us in a very good position for preparing for types of events,” said Ryan Jacobsen, CEO of the Fresno County Farm Bureau. Farmers are taking proactive measures, including pruning and roping trees during dry intervals to mitigate potential storm damage.

So far, the storms have been manageable, according to Jacobsen. “Based off how the series of storms have been coming in, they’re perfect amounts. We’re not seeing widespread flooding, and it’s allowing this ground to soak it up, most importantly, allowing that snowpack to build up in the Sierra Nevada.”

Snowpack levels are crucial for water availability during the dry seasons, and the Department of Water Resources has released critical data showing a snow depth of 24 inches and a snow water content of 5 inches, which is about 50% of the state average. “The statewide snowpack is currently at 71% of average,” noted Angelique Fabbiani-Leon, a hydrometeorologist with the department. She cautioned that it remains early to determine the overall water availability for the season.

Farmers are expressing a mix of excitement and caution. “It’s an exciting time right now, but it’s cautious optimism, hoping that we’re going to continue to see these storms roll in,” Jacobsen added.
