Urgent Announcement: Charles M. Payment Passes Away at 78
URGENT UPDATE: Charles (Chuck) M. Payment has passed away peacefully at the age of 78 on March 9, 2026, in Duluth, MN. His family expresses deep gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Beehive and Gentiva, as well as heartfelt thanks to caregivers Janelle and Christelle.
Chuck was born on February 3, 1948, in Frankfurt, MI, and grew up in Empire, MI. He graduated from Glen Lake High School in 1966 before pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Tech. While at college, he worked as a Ski Patrol and was an active member of ROTC.
After earning his degree, Chuck served in the Army Reserve from 1972 to 1980, achieving the rank of Captain. He began his illustrious career in fuel transmission at Great Lakes Gas Transmission, where he worked for an impressive 39 years.
In 1973, Chuck met his future wife, Alyce Heimsjo, at the Buffalo House in Duluth. Together, they raised two children, Brooke and Cory. Chuck dedicated himself to the community as a youth hockey coach for his son Cory’s teams, spending countless evenings maintaining the outdoor rinks in Duluth. He and Alyce were avid supporters of the UMD Bulldogs Men’s Hockey team for over 35 years.
After retiring in 2011, Chuck embraced the great outdoors, enjoying activities like boating on Lake Superior, fishing, and hunting. He treasured moments spent with Cory in Montana, fishing for salmon on Lake Michigan, deer hunting near Hinckley, and pheasant hunting in South Dakota with friends.
Chuck is survived by his beloved wife Alyce, son Cory, daughter Brooke Day (Aric), their children Leo and Elin Day, and brother Leigh Payment (Linda). He was predeceased by his older brother, Lou Payment.
A celebration of Chuck’s life is scheduled for March 21, 2026, at 11 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Duluth, with visitation starting at 10 AM. A luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Trinity Lutheran Church in Chuck’s honor.
