University of San Francisco Athletic Director Larry Williams Dies at 62
BREAKING: Larry Williams, the athletic director of the University of San Francisco, tragically passed away at the age of 62 while exercising at the campus gym on Thursday morning. This shocking news has sent ripples through the USF community, as officials confirm his sudden death at War Memorial Gym in the Sobrato Center.
No details regarding the cause of death have been disclosed, leaving many in disbelief. USF President Salvador Aceves expressed heartfelt condolences in a letter to the community, stating, “Our prayers go out to Larry’s wife, Laura, their children, Kristin, Sean, Scott, Eric, and Louis, their families, and his grandchildren.” He also extended support to the university’s 250 student-athletes and all coaches and staff under Williams’ leadership.
Williams had a significant impact on USF athletics since taking the helm in July 2022. Before joining USF, he served as athletic director at other prestigious institutions, including the University of Portland and Marquette. His legacy in sports was not just administrative; he was also a standout athlete himself. A two-time All-America selection at offensive line for Notre Dame, Williams enjoyed an NFL career with the Cleveland Browns, starting 33 games between 1985 and 1992.
With the community mourning this unexpected loss, Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, the deputy athletic director, has been appointed as the interim athletic director. This transition comes at a critical time as USF navigates its future direction in athletics.
Authorities report that more updates will follow as the university community processes this significant loss. The impact of Williams’ death is felt deeply, marking a poignant moment for the university’s athletic program.
