U.S. Military Seizes Maduro, Sparks Hope for Venezuela and Cuba

UPDATE: In a stunning military operation, the U.S. military has seized Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, marking a pivotal moment for Venezuelan democracy and potentially signaling changes in Cuba. Gimenez expressed hope that Maduro’s removal would pave the way for free elections that had been obstructed by the deposed dictator. “This is a big day for Venezuela. It’s the first step. Hopefully this will lead to the restoration of democracy,” he asserted. “But there is work to be done.”

Mario Diaz-Balart, another Miami congressman, connected the regime change to the influx of drugs and gang violence into the United States, praising Trump’s decisive actions against these threats. “While others dithered, President Trump recognized this threat for what it is and acted with resolve,” he stated.

Representative María Elvira Salazar urged the Venezuelan military to align with the citizens who voted in a July 28, 2024 election, which was widely recognized as a victory for opposition candidate Edmundo González. “The decisive moment has arrived. History will judge your actions,” Salazar wrote. “Stand with the Venezuelan people, respect the mandate expressed at the ballot boxes, and guarantee a peaceful and immediate transfer of power.”

Local leaders are now turning their attention to Cuba, a crucial ally of Venezuela. Miami-Dade’s elected tax collector, Dariel Fernandez, celebrated Maduro’s seizure, stating, “Now the time has come for Cuba.” He noted that this military action will resonate strongly in the Miami area, home to thousands of Venezuelan Americans.

Miami-Dade Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis also expressed optimism that the end of Maduro’s rule could trigger leadership changes in Cuba. “To the Venezuelan people fighting for liberty, you are not alone,” she stated. “To the enemies of freedom in Havana and across our hemisphere, take notice. Your days are numbered.”
