Trump Exhibits ‘No-Energy’ Tactics in Ukraine Peace Talks
UPDATE: President Donald Trump is reportedly showing signs of fatigue in his approach to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to analyst Michael Weiss. During a recent episode of The Bulwark Podcast, Weiss highlighted Trump’s “no-energy” attempts to pressure Ukraine into conceding to Russia‘s peace demands, emphasizing that the situation remains stagnant nearly a year after Trump pledged to end the war within 24 hours of taking office.
In a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump attempted to negotiate a controversial peace plan that included ceding Ukrainian territory to Russia. Reports indicate that the discussion devolved into a shouting match, reminiscent of their earlier disagreements in the Oval Office this past January 2023. Weiss described Trump’s demeanor as lacking the enthusiasm he displayed just months ago, stating, “He’s getting kind of tired… he’s sort of a no-energy Trump.”
Weiss further noted that Trump’s recent interactions suggest a possible influence from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Following Trump’s public endorsement of selling Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, Putin reached out to him, leading to a noticeable shift in Trump’s rhetoric, according to Weiss. “He started sounding ‘like Putin’,” Weiss remarked, pointing out the former president’s admiration for authoritarian leaders.
The implications of Trump’s waning energy in these crucial negotiations may have significant consequences for Ukraine’s sovereignty and the broader geopolitical landscape. As the war drags on, the urgency for a decisive resolution is more pressing than ever.
As the situation continues to develop, observers are closely monitoring how Trump’s approach may shift and what impact it could have on the already fragile situation in Ukraine. For now, the world watches as the stakes remain high, and the future of peace in the region hangs in the balance.
