Trial Begins for Dennis Jelks Accused of Murdering Ex-Girlfriend
UPDATE: A trial has officially commenced for Dennis Jelks, a 60-year-old man accused of murdering his estranged girlfriend, Angela Carrier, on January 26, 2021. Carrier, aged 37, was last seen alive during a meeting with Jelks at a Merrillville Menards store, where family members accompanied her to retrieve personal belongings after their breakup.
The prosecution alleges that Jelks lured Carrier away from her family on that fateful afternoon around 1:30 p.m., claiming he had her mail. She was reported missing shortly after. Tragically, her body was discovered on January 30, 2021, shot twice in the back of the head near 30th Avenue and Jackson Street.
Authorities confirmed that ballistic analysis indicated the bullets came from a .38-caliber or .357-caliber firearm. Family members have voiced concerns over Jelks’ history of abuse and noted that he often kept a gun in his vehicle.
During the trial, Deputy Prosecutors Infinity Westberg and Chris Bruno presented evidence suggesting a “long and tumultuous” relationship between Jelks and Carrier. They emphasized that he was the last person seen with her alive. Cell phone records revealed Jelks’ device pinged at Menards and later in the vicinity of where Carrier’s body was found, contradicting his account of events.
Jelks, however, maintains his innocence. His attorney, Michael Lambert, argued that the prosecution lacks direct physical evidence linking Jelks to Carrier’s death, claiming they have spun a narrative based on circumstantial evidence and unreliable witness testimony. He highlighted that Jelks’ DNA was not found at the crime scene and that the precise timeline of Carrier’s death remains unclear.
A significant moment in court involved a recorded phone call made by Carrier’s stepfather, Shannon Smith, who directly confronted Jelks shortly after her disappearance, stating, “Dude, you got something to do with it.” This conversation raised alarms for the family, especially since Carrier’s dogs were left unattended at home.
Carrier’s son, Caleb, described the couple’s relationship as “toxic,” and noted that they were in the process of breaking up. He and Smith had accompanied Carrier to Menards to retrieve her mail from Jelks. After her disappearance, Caleb expressed deep concern for his mother’s safety.
The trial is poised to reveal more about the dynamics of Jelks and Carrier’s relationship, with potential testimonies from friends and family members expected to paint a fuller picture of the events leading up to her death.
Authorities continue to gather evidence in this high-profile case, and the community remains on edge as the trial unfolds. The next court session is anticipated to delve deeper into the evidence and witness accounts that may determine Jelks’ fate.
This developing story underscores the urgent need for awareness surrounding domestic abuse and its tragic outcomes. Stay tuned for updates as this critical trial progresses.
