UPDATE: All-Star guard Trae Young has officially announced his departure from the Atlanta Hawks, revealing his excitement for a fresh start with the Washington Wizards. In a heartfelt social media post on Friday, Young expressed disappointment over not achieving the team’s full potential during his seven-plus seasons in Atlanta.

Young stated he had been pushing for a trade to the Wizards through discussions between his agents and Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh. “The last few years weren’t how I wanted them to be,” he wrote. “Expectations that we created for ourselves, reaching heights that Atlanta has never reached before.”

Sources from ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Young will be traded for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, although official announcements are still pending. Young, who has $95 million left on his contract, including a player option for the 2026-27 season, discussed his readiness to embrace change.

“The pain of staying the same eventually outweighed the uncertainty of change,” he explained. “Change is often met with fear, but I see it as another opportunity.” His move signifies a significant shift for both the Hawks and the Wizards, aiming to reshape their futures.

Young leaves Atlanta as the franchise’s all-time leader in 3-pointers (1,295) and assists (4,837). He led the Hawks to the postseason three times, highlighted by a memorable run to the Eastern Conference finals in 2021. Despite recent injury setbacks, including a right MCL sprain and a right quad contusion, Young remains optimistic about his new journey.

“I’m walking into this next chapter ecstatic, with my head high and my eyes forward,” he concluded. “It’s time to see what’s possible when the support is real and vision is clear. We move.”

As the trade unfolds, both teams will closely monitor Young’s health. The Wizards are not expected to rush into extension talks, opting instead to evaluate him upon his arrival in Washington. This developing story is a pivotal moment for Young, the Hawks, and the Wizards, marking a new era in NBA dynamics.
