Thunder’s Jalen Williams OUT for Season Opener vs. Rockets
UPDATE: Oklahoma City Thunder star forward Jalen Williams has been officially ruled out of the team’s highly anticipated season opener against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night. This decision comes as Williams continues his recovery from offseason surgery on his right wrist, which required significant medical intervention.
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault has been tight-lipped about Williams’ recovery timeline, only stating that he is “progressing” and “right on schedule.” Williams suffered a serious injury, tearing the scapholunate ligament in his wrist on April 9, 2023. He opted to postpone surgery until after the Thunder’s impressive championship run, during which he received nearly 30 pain-killing injections to manage his injury.
During the playoffs, Williams delivered an outstanding performance, averaging 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. His crowning moment came with a remarkable 40-point game in the pivotal Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Reflecting on the sacrifices made for victory, Williams stated,
“It was a necessary evil to win. I would’ve cut my hand off to win a championship.”
Despite his commitment, Williams acknowledged that he was aware of the risks when he underwent surgery in early July. He has only recently begun shooting with his right hand, and he remains uncertain about when he will be game-ready. “Just whenever I feel like I can be a hundred percent, then I’ll rock out,” he mentioned during the preseason. “Part of the process is just figuring out how to get my jump shot back. A lot of it is just trying to get feel back.”
As the Thunder prepares for the season opener, fans are left wondering how Williams’ absence will impact the team’s performance against the Rockets. With a robust roster and championship aspirations, the Thunder will need to adapt quickly.
Stay tuned for updates on Williams’ recovery and the game’s developments as the Thunder aim to kick off their title defense.
