The company has just announced raising $64 million in seed funding, positioning itself as a frontrunner in the race for advanced mathematical innovation.

Axiom Math, founded by Hong, a Rhodes Scholar and Stanford dropout, aims to tackle complex math problems that have stumped experts for decades. The company recently claimed to have solved two challenging Erdos math problems, enhancing its credibility and allure in the tech industry.

With a team of 17 employees, many hailing from Meta’s renowned Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) lab, Axiom is drawing attention for its ambitious goals. Meta has been undergoing a series of layoffs, particularly impacting its AI teams, which has created a unique opportunity for Axiom Math to attract high-caliber talent like Shubho Sengupta, Axiom’s CTO, whom Hong serendipitously met at a coffee shop. Other notable recruits from Meta include Francois Charton, Aram Markosyan, and Hugh Leather.

In a competitive market, Axiom’s vision for long-term impact has resonated with researchers. Hong noted that despite Meta’s attractive retention packages, the potential for groundbreaking work at Axiom was a significant draw. “They have been exhilarated by the mission since day one,” she said, recalling the startup’s humble beginnings with a plastic folding table and a friend’s couch.

Adding to Axiom’s credibility, Hong has also recruited her former professor, renowned mathematician Ken Ono, further solidifying the startup’s intellectual foundation. In a market that often equates age with experience, Hong challenges that notion, advocating for a “non-hierarchical” culture that prioritizes ideas over titles.
