Scherzer Leads Blue Jays to 8-2 Win, Tying ALCS at 2-2
UPDATE: In a thrilling postseason showdown, Max Scherzer showcased his legendary intensity, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a decisive 8-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on October 12, 2023. This victory ties the American League Championship Series at two games apiece, intensifying the playoff race.
Scherzer, 41, delivered a remarkable performance during his first postseason start of the year, allowing just two runs and three hits over 5 2/3 innings. The three-time Cy Young Award winner demonstrated his unmatched ferocity, especially in a pivotal moment in the fifth inning when he fiercely told manager John Schneider, “I’m good! Let’s go!”
This pivotal win comes as the Blue Jays aim to reclaim momentum in the series after a challenging start. Scherzer’s fierce competitiveness was on full display, shrugging off a rocky beginning that saw him walk two batters in the first inning. However, he rebounded to strike out Randy Arozarena with an impressive 79 mph curveball, showcasing his ability to rise to the occasion.
Despite a turbulent end to the regular season, where he posted a staggering 9.00 ERA over his final six starts, Scherzer’s experience shined through. His performance not only marked a significant milestone, making him the fourth pitcher aged 41 or older to win a playoff game, but also snapped a five-start postseason winless streak. He now joins a select group of legends including Kenny Rogers and Roger Clemens.
The Blue Jays took control early, with Andres Gimenez hitting a two-run homer, setting the tone for the night. The Mariners’ manager Dan Wilson made a questionable decision to replace starter Luis Castillo in the third inning, which backfired as the Blue Jays capitalized on the moment, increasing their lead.
As the game progressed, the Toronto offense continued to dominate, highlighted by a home run from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the seventh inning—his fifth of the postseason—bringing the team’s total to 17 home runs in just eight playoff games.
By the ninth inning, the atmosphere shifted dramatically as many Mariners fans exited the stadium, leaving the remaining Blue Jays supporters to chant, “Let’s go, Blue Jays!” This victory not only boosts team morale but also sets the stage for an intense Game 5 in the series.
Looking ahead, all eyes will be on the next matchup as the Blue Jays aim to leverage this momentum. With Scherzer’s return to form and the offense firing on all cylinders, the Blue Jays are poised to make a significant push in the ALCS.
