Rocky Hill Ends New Britain’s Unbeaten Streak in Thrilling 54-52 Victory
UPDATE: The Rocky Hill girls basketball team has just handed New Britain its first loss of the season, defeating the previously unbeaten squad 54-52 in a nail-biting showdown on January 15, 2023. This shocking result comes after a hard-fought game where Rocky Hill, despite trailing for most of the night, showcased remarkable resilience and teamwork.
The game took place at New Britain High School, where the Terriers faced intense pressure from the three-time defending state champions. Rocky Hill’s junior star, Jill Rhouddou, emerged as the hero, scoring eight of her 16 points in the crucial fourth quarter. Her pivotal offensive rebound and game-winning shot at the shot clock buzzer propelled her team to victory, marking a significant upset.
New Britain, boasting a perfect record of 15-0 before this game, struggled to maintain their lead due to foul troubles impacting their senior leadership. Their head coach, Michael Jones, reflected on the game, stating,
“Our youth showed up tonight. We had the game in hand; we couldn’t finish down the stretch. Rocky Hill has four seniors that were more composed than we were at the end.”
Despite New Britain’s efforts, led by senior Kayla Roberts with 19 points, the team could not clinch the win. Amelia Faienza also contributed significantly for New Britain, scoring 15 points. The loss highlights the challenges they faced against a more experienced Rocky Hill team.
Rocky Hill’s coach, Pete Asadourian, praised his players for their perseverance, stating,
“They’re a great team. They’re quick. Roberts is unbelievable, she kept us on our toes all night. We persevered. We’re led by four seniors. Those guys don’t want to let up.”
Key moments in the game included Rocky Hill’s point guard, Kelsey LaMay, who battled foul trouble but still managed to make critical plays, including a three-pointer that cut New Britain’s lead to 44-42 in the fourth quarter. The Terriers rallied back, taking their first lead with just over two minutes left on the clock.
As the final seconds ticked away, New Britain had a chance to tie the game, but a last-second shot from Jazzy Garcia narrowly missed, sealing the victory for Rocky Hill.
With this win, Rocky Hill improves its record to 13-1, while New Britain falls to 15-1. This game serves as a crucial learning experience for New Britain as they prepare for upcoming challenges in the season.
Fans and players alike are left buzzing about this thrilling encounter and what it means for both teams moving forward. Rocky Hill’s triumph over New Britain marks a pivotal moment in the girls basketball season, and the implications of this game will surely resonate as the teams head into the playoffs.
