Replit CEO Urges Focus on Functional AGI Over True AGI Now
UPDATE: Replit CEO Amjad Masad has sparked urgent discussions in the tech community by asserting that the focus should shift from pursuing true AGI to developing “functional AGI” that can significantly transform the economy. In a recent episode of the a16z podcast published on October 5, 2023, Masad emphasized that practical AI systems are already capable of automating substantial portions of the workforce, making them economically invaluable.
Masad’s comments come amid growing skepticism about the feasibility of achieving true AGI—the kind that mimics human-like intelligence across various fields. He argues that while true AGI could revolutionize civilization, the industry should not overlook the immediate potential of functional AGI, which does not require consciousness but can learn from data and perform complex tasks independently.
“We’re on a track to automate a big part of labor across every sector of the economy,” Masad stated decisively. He noted that many AI companies may be trapped in a “local maximum trap,” optimizing existing models without innovating toward breakthroughs. “Maybe the general problem is actually not within our lifetimes,” he added, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the path to true AGI.
The discussion is particularly timely as major tech players like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft continue to pursue AGI, investing significant resources and talent. However, skepticism is rising. Notable AI expert Gary Marcus recently criticized the belief that merely scaling AI will lead to true intelligence, suggesting that the industry is waking up to the reality that previous predictions of AGI by 2027 were more marketing than feasible goals.
The recent release of OpenAI’s GPT-5 has also drawn mixed reviews. During a press call in August, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that, while GPT-5 is generally intelligent, it still falls short of conventional definitions of AGI. Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, echoed the sentiment, warning that true AGI might still be decades away, as “most interesting problems scale extremely badly.”
As the debate intensifies, Masad’s focus on functional AGI offers a pragmatic perspective that could shape the future of work and technology. With the potential to automate large parts of the economy, the implications for job markets and productivity are profound.
