Readers Set Ambitious 2026 Literary Goals Amid New Year Rush
UPDATE: As the new year unfolds, avid readers are setting ambitious literary goals for 2026. Book enthusiasts like Cheyenne and her friend are taking an innovative approach, pledging to read a total of 100 books this year. With a focus on physical to-be-read (TBR) shelves, they aim to reduce their unread books significantly.
In a recent conversation, Cheyenne shared her experiences from last year, revealing that she completed 92 books in 2025 but adjusted her original target to 100 books mid-year. “I am proud of my progress and excited to keep my TBR under 100 this year,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of setting realistic yet challenging goals.
The duo has devised a unique plan to tackle their unread books, creating a spin wheel with 26 titles they own but haven’t read yet. Each spin will determine the next book to dive into, starting with “12 Years a Slave” by Solomon Northup. This method not only adds an element of excitement but also keeps their reading journey fresh and engaging.
Cheyenne also highlighted her must-read list for the year, which she pared down to three titles: “The Compound” by Aisling Rawle, “Atmosphere” by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and “Dinner for Vampires” by Bethany Joy Lenz. Additionally, her friend Nick has suggested “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead to round out her list, ensuring a well-rounded reading experience.
With the reading landscape shifting dramatically, Cheyenne is also focusing on her writing goals. “I have a novel idea that I want to pursue outside of work hours,” she shared. This reflects a growing trend among readers who are looking to balance their reading with creative writing endeavors, further enriching their literary experience.
Reading remains a significant part of life, and statistics from The Washington Post emphasize its importance. Just two books a year places readers above half of U.S. adults, while 50 or more books positions them within the top 1%. As life gets busier, Cheyenne encourages everyone to embrace whatever reading they can accomplish.
As 2026 progresses, the push for increased literacy and engagement with literature is more relevant than ever. Readers are urged to share their own goals and strategies, fostering a community of literary enthusiasts ready to tackle new challenges ahead.
Stay tuned for ongoing updates as the literary journey unfolds this year, and remember: even one book read is a victory worth celebrating!
