Pirates Sign LHP Gregory Soto to Urgent $7.75 Million Deal
BREAKING: The Pittsburgh Pirates have just announced a pivotal move, signing left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto to a one-year, $7.75 million contract, according to sources from ESPN. This urgent update comes as the Pirates aim to bolster their bullpen, significantly impacting their roster ahead of the upcoming MLB season.
Soto, who turned 30 this year, is a two-time All-Star and had a 4.18 ERA over 70 appearances last season with the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets. He began his career with the Detroit Tigers, where he posted a 4.13 ERA over four seasons. His experience and hard-throwing capabilities are expected to enhance the Pirates’ pitching lineup, which currently features Dennis Santana as the closer.
The deal marks a significant step for the Pirates, who are looking to revamp their roster after finishing the previous season with a payroll of just $84 million. As the offseason progresses, the team has been actively exploring various player acquisitions to build a competitive squad. Earlier this offseason, the Pirates expressed interest in outfielder Trent Grisham before he accepted a qualifying offer from the New York Yankees, and designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who has since re-signed with the Phillies.
Soto’s journey has been eventful; after being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies following the 2022 season, he was moved to the Orioles in 2024. He was then traded to the Mets at last season’s trade deadline, showcasing his value across multiple teams.
This signing is expected to resonate within the baseball community, as the Pirates aim to make a stronger impact in the upcoming season. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Soto integrates into the team’s strategy and performance.
As the MLB offseason heats up, stay tuned for further updates on player movements and team strategies. The Pirates’ commitment to improving their roster could set the stage for a more competitive season ahead.
