Petr Yan Dethrones Dvalishvili to Reclaim Flyweight Title at UFC 323
UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, Petr Yan has reclaimed the UFC men’s flyweight title, dethroning Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision at UFC 323 held in Las Vegas on October 21, 2023. The judges delivered scores of 49-46 and 48-47 in favor of Yan, marking a stunning comeback for the former champion.
Yan (20-5) displayed an aggressive fighting style that was absent in their previous encounter earlier this year, where Dvalishvili dominated with a record-setting 49 takedown attempts. In that match, Yan successfully defended against 38, but remained on the defensive throughout. This time, however, Yan flipped the script, controlling the pace and dictating the action.
The fight took a decisive turn in the second round when Yan executed the first takedown of the bout, surprising Dvalishvili (21-5), who is known for his grappling prowess with a total of 117 takedowns—the most in UFC history. Remarkably, Dvalishvili failed to add to that total, going 0-for-13 in the opening rounds. Overall, he finished with just 2-of-24 successful takedown attempts, while Yan landed 3-of-5.
Yan’s striking proved to be the decisive factor, as he landed an impressive 60% of his significant strikes. His sharp jabs and powerful kicks visibly hurt Dvalishvili, leaving the champion with a bloodied face.
This fight is not only a personal triumph for Yan but also a significant moment in the UFC flyweight division. Fans are buzzing with excitement as Yan’s victory reignites his career and sets the stage for potential future matchups.
What’s next for these fighters? As Yan celebrates his title reclaiming, questions arise about Dvalishvili’s next steps in the octagon. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how both fighters adapt following this pivotal clash.
