UPDATE: In a nail-biting finish, Parkland High School’s boys basketball team clinched a 54-49 victory against Allentown Central Catholic on January 13, 2024, at Rockne Hall. This pivotal win not only boosts Parkland’s confidence but also sets the stage for an exciting playoff push in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

The game showcased an impressive turnaround for Parkland after a challenging start. Star player Blake Nassry, who was held scoreless in the first half, exploded in the third quarter, contributing 7 points and helping his team maintain the lead for the remainder of the game. Senior Tyler Beck shone brightly with a career-high 19 points, including a crucial 3-pointer that extended the Trojans’ lead to 37-25 midway through the third quarter.

Parkland trailed early, facing a 16-9 deficit in the first quarter, but rallied back to take a 27-25 lead into halftime. Senior teammates Jude Ruisch and Ryan Kearney played pivotal roles, with Ruisch finishing with 16 points and demonstrating exceptional performance from the free-throw line.

As the decisive third quarter unfolded, Parkland capitalized on Central Catholic’s struggles, shooting 6-for-11 overall and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, while Central Catholic managed only 4-for-15 shooting. “Once we get the lead, I feel we can control the game,” Ruisch stated, reflecting the team’s strategy to maintain momentum.

Central Catholic, currently holding a record of 8-4, tried to claw back in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to 46-41 with a steal and layup from Di’Quawn Leaks. However, Parkland’s composure shone through as they executed flawless free throws in the closing minutes, securing the victory and ending a three-game losing streak.

The win is especially significant for Parkland, currently ranked No. 3 in the lehighvalleylive Top 12, as they navigate a challenging season with two starters sidelined due to injuries. Coach Eddie Ohlson emphasized the importance of building team chemistry during this phase.

“Playing tough opponents has given us confidence,” Beck noted, as the team prepares for crucial EPC matchups ahead. The victory underscores not only their skill but also their resilience, proving that they can compete effectively despite setbacks.

Looking forward, Parkland aims to build on this momentum as they head deeper into January and approach the playoffs in February. Central Catholic, coached by Dennis Csensits, remains optimistic about their trajectory, with hopes of peaking in time for postseason play.
