Milwaukee Faces Severe Traffic Disruptions as Hawley Road Closes
URGENT UPDATE: Traffic disruptions have begun in Milwaukee as Hawley Road officially closed today, affecting local commuters significantly. This closure is part of the extensive I-94 East-West reconstruction project, which will last nearly three years, creating immediate challenges for residents and drivers alike.
The Hawley Road section between Park Hill Avenue and Hawley Court will remain shut until late 2028. Local resident Alexander Albape expressed frustration, stating, “It’s loud,” as he navigates increased traffic outside his home. This area is now a primary detour route, leading to longer commutes for many.
Jessica Janiszewski, another local, voiced her concerns: “It’s gonna be really bad.” With a school nearby, she fears that the detoured traffic will lead to speeding and unsafe driving conditions in residential neighborhoods. “I just worry about a lot of traffic coming through here… not obeying the signs,” she added.
As construction progresses, crews will be rebuilding the Hawley Road interchange into a half-interchange, eliminating eastbound ramps while maintaining access from the west. All ramps will be closed, prompting drivers to find alternative routes through local neighborhoods, further complicating traffic.
Residents are urging fellow drivers to prioritize safety during this challenging period. “Just be safe around the kids… slow down,” Albape implored. Janiszewski echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of obeying speed limits and traffic signs to protect the community.
This construction is part of a larger, eight-year project addressing the I-94 corridor between 70th Street and 16th Street, aimed at improving traffic flow and infrastructure. Yet, locals are now grappling with the immediate impacts of these changes.
As the situation develops, residents and officials alike are monitoring the effects on local traffic. Authorities are expected to implement measures to enhance safety in response to community concerns. For ongoing updates, stay tuned to local news and check the official Wisconsin DOT website.
With the closure creating significant disruptions, Milwaukee residents are urged to plan for longer travel times and increased caution on detour routes. The community’s safety and adaptability will be critical as this major construction project unfolds.
