Mariners’ Gilbert Set to Start Game 6, One Win from World Series
UPDATE: The Seattle Mariners stand on the brink of history as they prepare for a pivotal Game 6 of the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays on October 15, 2023. Pitcher Logan Gilbert has been named the starter, leading Seattle just one victory away from their first-ever American League pennant.
After a thrilling 6-2 comeback victory in Game 5, the Mariners hold a 3-2 series lead and are poised to face the Blue Jays at 1:00 PM ET. A win would secure their spot in the World Series, which begins against the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 20, 2023.
“We’re nine long innings away from where we want to be,” Gilbert stated, emphasizing the urgency of their upcoming game. “Just to get to this point is amazing. But to be the one to have the ball, you grow up dreaming of moments like this.”
Gilbert, who previously pitched two scoreless innings in relief during a tense 15-inning victory against the Detroit Tigers, returns to the mound on five days’ rest. Last time he faced Toronto, he allowed three runs over three innings in Game 2, but Seattle emerged victorious 10-3.
Mariners’ manager Dan Wilson praised Gilbert’s mental resilience and focus. “Logan is a guy you love to give the ball to. He wants the ball in these situations,” Wilson said. “He’s ready for tomorrow for sure.”
On the other side, the Blue Jays are in a must-win scenario and will counter with rookie Trey Yesavage. Yesavage made history this postseason, striking out 11 batters in a Divisional Series game, but faced struggles in his last outing against Seattle. “This opportunity does not come up very often,” Yesavage remarked, recognizing the significance of his start.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider expressed confidence in Yesavage’s ability to handle pressure. “He’s pitched in big postseason games, and we’ve got all the confidence in the world that he’ll have the right mindset,” Schneider stated.
In addition to the pitching match-up, the Blue Jays are hopeful for the return of designated hitter George Springer, who left Game 5 after being hit on the kneecap. “Feeling a lot better than he did yesterday,” Schneider reported, indicating that Springer’s experience could prove crucial in this high-stakes game.
As the Mariners and Blue Jays gear up for this critical showdown, the atmosphere is electric. Fans across Seattle and Toronto are holding their breath, knowing that one game could define a season and change the trajectory of their franchises forever.
The stakes have never been higher. Tune in at 1:00 PM ET to witness the latest chapter in this gripping playoff saga.
