Mackenzie Dern Claims UFC Strawweight Title in Thrilling Victory
UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill and determination, Mackenzie Dern has captured the vacant UFC women’s strawweight title, defeating Virna Jandiroba by unanimous decision at UFC 321. The fight, which took place on October 14, 2023, saw two judges score it 48-47, while a third scored it 49-46, confirming Dern’s dominance in the octagon.
“This feels amazing,” said a tearful Dern, who celebrated her victory alongside her six-year-old daughter in the octagon. The title was vacated by Zhang Weili, who is preparing for a highly anticipated fight against flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko in November.
The rematch between Dern and Jandiroba marked a significant moment, as they previously faced off in December 2020, where Dern emerged victorious in a striking-focused bout. This time, Jandiroba attempted to mix in takedowns to disrupt Dern’s rhythm, but the newly crowned champion was ready for everything her opponent had to offer.
Throughout the 25-minute fight, Dern showcased her improved striking, outstriking Jandiroba with a tally of 247 to 152 significant strikes. “We knew the striking was good, but I wish it was better,” Dern remarked. “I was hoping for a knockout.”
Despite a record of 5-4 in her last nine fights, Dern’s dedication to enhancing her striking was evident. She opened the fight aggressively, firing off leg kicks and punches that set the tone early on. Although Jandiroba managed to take Dern down nine times, she struggled to inflict significant damage, allowing Dern to return to her feet repeatedly.
As the fight progressed, Jandiroba displayed visible signs of damage, including swelling under her right eye, while Dern’s face also bore the marks of battle. Despite her efforts, Jandiroba could not overcome Dern’s striking prowess and ground defense.
“I thought it was going to be a little easier,” Dern acknowledged. “I know she would get the takedowns. I think I did a lot of damage on the ground, but we did a little bit of everything in the cage with striking and on the ground.”
With this victory, Dern has solidified her place at the top of the strawweight division, improving her record against Jandiroba to 2-0. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how she navigates her championship reign as the UFC landscape continues to evolve.
For now, Mackenzie Dern stands as the new champion, ready to face future challenges in her career.
