UPDATE: The Luzerne County Planning Commission has just approved a vital plan for upgrades at the Wilkes-Barre Wyoming Valley Airport in Forty Fort, Pennsylvania. This decision, made on January 8, 2026, paves the way for significant improvements aimed at enhancing airport operations and services.

The approved enhancements include the construction of two additional aircraft storage “T-hangar” structures, a new Jet A fuel system, and an automated weather observing system. Additionally, a dedicated helicopter fueling pad will be added, while an older underground jet fuel tank will be removed. Upgrades to pavement and stormwater management controls are also part of the project, which is set to commence in May or June 2026.

This initiative is backed by a substantial allocation of $7.45 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which aims to stimulate the economy post-COVID-19. Luzerne County received a total of $113 million in ARPA funds, with a spending deadline looming on December 31, 2026.

The Luzerne County Division Head of Operations, Michele Sparich, and Director of Project Management, Nick Vough, along with consultants from RETTEW Associates and Delta Airport Consultants, presented the proposal at the commission meeting. Conditional approval was granted, pending further authorization from the state Department of Environmental Protection due to the construction site encompassing 27 acres of the 95-acre airport property.

Importantly, officials confirmed that these upgrades will not affect emergency service demand, increase vehicular traffic, or modify existing roadways. Public sewer and electricity are available, but water and sewer connections will not be installed in the new hangars.

This development is crucial for the local economy and air travel efficiency, marking a significant step forward for the airport’s capabilities. As preparations begin, stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact these improvements will have on the community.
