Loyola-Chicago Honors Sister Jean with Jersey Patch for Season
UPDATE: Loyola-Chicago men’s basketball team is set to honor the late Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt by wearing a special patch on their jerseys this season. The announcement was made just days after the beloved chaplain’s passing on October 9, 2023, at the remarkable age of 106.
In a heartfelt social media post, the team declared, “Our biggest fan will be with us all season long 💛🐺🏀.” This tribute underlines Sister Jean’s profound impact on the team, especially during their stunning run to the Final Four in 2018.
Sister Jean, born Dolores Bertha Schmidt on August 21, 1919, became a fixture at Loyola-Chicago after joining the staff in 1991. She transitioned to the basketball team in 1994, where she served as an academic adviser and later as the team’s chaplain. Her unwavering support and prayers became legendary, particularly during the Ramblers’ Cinderella story in the NCAA tournament, where they shocked the world as a No. 11 seed and carried on to the Final Four, ultimately succumbing to Michigan.
The Ramblers are set to kick off their season on Monday at home against Cleveland State, and the team is determined to carry Sister Jean’s spirit onto the court. “She was our No. 1 fan, and her passion will inspire us as we play this season,” said a team spokesperson.
Sister Jean’s legacy as a motivator and a source of faith for the players has left an indelible mark on Loyola-Chicago basketball. Health issues led her to step down from her role in August 2023, but her influence remains strong among the team and fans alike.
As the season unfolds, fans are encouraged to wear their own patches in support of Sister Jean, ensuring her spirit will be felt in every game. The Ramblers’ first game promises to be an emotional tribute to a woman who inspired countless individuals with her kindness and unwavering belief in the power of teamwork.
Stay tuned for updates as Loyola-Chicago embarks on a season filled with memories of Sister Jean, one of college basketball’s most cherished figures.
