Judge Orders Trump to Halt National Guard Deployment in LA
BREAKING NEWS: A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to immediately cease the deployment of California National Guard troops in Los Angeles. The ruling, issued on Wednesday, December 10, 2023, by U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, mandates that control of the troops be returned to the state.
This urgent update comes as California officials challenged the federal government’s unprecedented move to utilize state Guard troops without the governor’s consent for immigration enforcement operations. The judge granted a preliminary injunction, although he has paused the decision until Monday, which may allow the administration to respond.
California’s legal team argued that circumstances in Los Angeles have significantly shifted since the initial deployment of over 4,000 troops back in June. By late October, that number dwindled to just 100 troops remaining in the area, raising questions about the necessity of the continued military presence.
The Trump administration had extended the troops’ deployment until February 2024, while also attempting to deploy California Guard members to Portland, Oregon. This move has faced staunch opposition from local leaders across Democratic-run cities, highlighting the growing tensions between state and federal authorities.
U.S. Justice Department lawyers contended that these National Guard members are critical for protecting federal personnel and property in the Los Angeles area. However, the state’s legal arguments emphasize the changed conditions and the diminishing need for such military forces, sparking a significant legal battle over the balance of power between state and federal jurisdictions.
As this developing story unfolds, all eyes will be on the upcoming decision scheduled for Monday. The implications of this ruling could resonate far beyond California, potentially shaping future interactions between state governors and federal authorities regarding the deployment of National Guard troops.
Stay tuned for updates on this critical legal showdown that could redefine the deployment of National Guard troops across the nation.
