Jack Ryan Co-Creator Responds to Viral Clip Amid Venezuela Crisis
URGENT UPDATE: Carlton Cuse, co-creator of the hit series Jack Ryan, has addressed a resurfaced scene from Season 2 that seemingly predicts the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. This comes on the heels of a recent U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, sparking widespread discussion online.
The viral clip, originally aired in 2019, shows CIA analyst Jack Ryan labeling Venezuela as “a major threat on the world stage.” He highlights the country’s vast oil and mineral resources and its strategic proximity to the U.S. “Venezuela is arguably the single greatest resource of oil and minerals on the planet,” Ryan states, while also pointing out the alarming rise in poverty, which has surged “by almost 400%,” alongside a halved economy.
In a statement to Deadline, Cuse reflected on the unexpected relevance of the scene to current events. “What always surprises you as a storyteller is how often real-world events catch up to fiction,” he said. He emphasized that the intent of the storyline was never to predict the future but rather to portray the plausibility of Venezuela’s geopolitical situation, developed over seven years ago.
Cuse explained that he and co-creator Graham Roland chose Venezuela for its “long-standing strategic relevance.” The narrative involves a fictional president being ousted following a confrontation in the presidential palace, culminating in a regime change that mirrors the recent U.S. military actions. Cuse noted, “Any time the United States uses force abroad, it’s a moment that deserves reflection. The consequences are borne most significantly by people who have very little control over events.”
The episode’s climax features a helicopter infiltration, paralleling the real-life military operation that has drawn international attention. Cuse expressed hope for a resolution, stating, “I can only hope things move toward stability and peace for the people living there.”
As the situation in Venezuela continues to develop, the parallels drawn between fiction and reality raise important questions about storytelling and its implications in our world. With the ongoing turmoil and humanitarian crisis, this discussion is more relevant than ever.
