Italian Basketball Team Ousted from Champions League in Forfeit
UPDATE: An Italian basketball team has been eliminated from the FIBA Champions League due to an unprecedented forfeit during a playoff match on October 31, 2023. The Trapani Shark found themselves down to just one active player on the court against Israeli team Hapoel Netanel Holon, resulting in an automatic loss.
This shocking turn of events unfolded in Bulgaria as Trapani faced Holon in a critical playoff game. With the score at 38-5 in favor of Holon, the game was halted when Trapani had “fewer than two players on the court ready to play.” The team arrived with only five players, two of whom were making their professional debuts. Reports indicate that three players exited the game in the first quarter, although the reasons remain unclear.
The rules of the competition stipulate that any team forfeiting a game during the play-ins or playoffs automatically loses the series. Consequently, Hapoel Netanel Holon advances, leaving Trapani’s future in jeopardy.
Trapani Shark is currently grappling with severe financial challenges, which prompted the club to participate in the match to avoid a staggering fine of €600,000 (approximately $700,000). The Italian Basketball Federation has already imposed sanctions on the team this season, further complicating their dire situation.
Earlier this week, the team also made headlines by opting not to play a league match against Virtus Segafredo, raising questions about the stability and viability of the club. As Trapani faces an uncertain future, fans and officials alike are left to wonder what this means for the team’s prospects moving forward.
As developments continue to emerge, the basketball community is left in shock, and the implications of this incident could ripple through the league. Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds.
