ICE Agents NOT Patrolling San Francisco Transit, SFMTA Confirms
UPDATE: The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are NOT patrolling Muni vehicles, despite growing public concern. This announcement was made on social media on October 23, 2025, amidst rising fears about federal immigration enforcement in public spaces.
SFMTA stated, “We have received inquiries about the presence of ICE on Muni vehicles. There are no credible reports that ICE agents are boarding Muni buses.” The assurance comes as many residents express anxiety over potential federal operations targeting undocumented individuals.
The backdrop to this development includes a planned deployment of ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to Coast Guard Island in Alameda, which occurred just days ago. On Thursday, October 23, these agents faced significant protests from hundreds of demonstrators who attempted to block access to the only bridge connecting the island to Oakland.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie revealed that a conversation with President Donald Trump led to the decision to cancel the anticipated “surge” of federal agents in the city. Reports indicate that Lurie, along with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, successfully urged Trump to allow the city more time to manage crime using local law enforcement.
The public can report any suspected ICE activity through the San Francisco Rapid Response Network, a resource designed to assist communities in the face of immigration enforcement actions.
As tensions persist in the Bay Area, residents remain on edge, concerned about the implications of federal presence in their daily lives. While this latest news provides a momentary sense of relief, many are still advocating for transparency and protection against potential future actions.
What happens next? Local leaders and communities are expected to remain vigilant, monitoring any changes in federal policy or action. The situation continues to evolve, and stakeholders are committed to ensuring that the rights and safety of residents are upheld.
