Hornets Hand Thunder Historic 27-Point Defeat in Shocking Upset
BREAKING: The Charlotte Hornets delivered a stunning blow to the Oklahoma City Thunder, defeating the NBA leaders 124-97 on Monday night. This loss marks the Thunder’s worst defeat of the season, shocking fans and analysts alike.
Brandon Miller led the Hornets with an impressive 28 points, while Kon Knueppel contributed 23 points as Charlotte snapped a rough stretch of three losses in four games. This game is significant as it represents Oklahoma City’s first loss to a team with a losing record since November 19, 2024, when they fell to the Spurs, who were 6-8 at that time.
In a game where the Thunder were favored by 15.5 points, they became the first team in the last 35 seasons to lose by over 20 points as a double-digit favorite. The Thunder had previously boasted a remarkable streak of 45 consecutive victories against teams below .500 and were 50-2 over the past two seasons.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder’s star player, managed to score only 21 points, marking his 108th consecutive game with at least 20 points, the second-longest streak in NBA history. However, his performance was below par, hitting just 7 of 21 field goals, resulting in a 33% shooting percentage—his lowest of the season. In a surprising twist, he sat out the fourth quarter, not due to a commanding lead, but because the Thunder trailed significantly.
Charlotte stormed to an early lead, jumping out to 21-9 before the Thunder managed to tie the game 33-33 by the end of the first period. However, the Hornets regained control and ended the first half with a commanding 67-50 lead after Miller scored 19 points before the break. The Thunder struggled at the line, making only 8 of 15 free throws in the first half, which compounded their woes.
In a highlight moment early in the third quarter, LaMelo Ball made an impressive circus shot while standing on one leg to extend Charlotte’s lead to 74-55. By the end of the third period, Miller’s buzzer-beater from beyond the arc pushed the Hornets’ advantage to 99-71, solidifying their dominance in the game.
As the Thunder suffer their second straight loss and their second home defeat of the season, they now hold a record of 30-7. Their early-season dominance is now in question, and fans will be looking to see how they bounce back from this unexpected defeat. The Hornets, conversely, will aim to build on this momentum as they look to improve their standing in the league.
Stay tuned for updates as the NBA season progresses, and watch for the Thunder’s next game to see if they can rebound from this shocking upset.
