Gas Prices Drop in Georgia; Banking Merger Completed Today
UPDATE: Gas prices in Georgia have fallen as of January 5, 2026, with the statewide average now at $2.65 per gallon, according to AAA. This marks a decrease of 3 cents from last week and a significant 25 cents from a year ago, indicating a continued downward trend at the pump despite ongoing global uncertainties that could impact future pricing.
In specific locations, such as Whitfield County, drivers are enjoying even lower prices, averaging $2.58 per gallon. Nationally, gas prices average $2.81 per gallon, with analysts predicting no major short-term shifts expected in the market. U.S. crude oil remains stable, closing at $57.32 per barrel, as global supply appears sufficient amid international volatility.
In another significant development, the merger between Synovus Financial Corp. and Pinnacle Financial Partners has officially completed today, creating a major banking entity now operating under the name Pinnacle Financial Partners, Inc. The merger, which was first announced in July 2025, was effective as of January 1, 2026 for the holding companies, with the bank merger concluding on January 2. The newly formed bank boasts approximately $117 billion in assets and over 400 locations across nine southeastern and Atlantic coast states. Shares began trading under the NYSE ticker “PNFP” on January 2.
As the community adjusts to this merger, customers at the local Synovus branch in Dalton at 1501 N. Thornton Ave. will continue to receive service as the integration unfolds.
On a more somber note, the Georgia Department of Public Safety has reported seven traffic fatalities statewide during the New Year’s holiday travel period. This statistic, released earlier this week, shows a slight decrease compared to last year’s nine fatalities. During the reporting period, law enforcement recorded 368 DUI arrests and 482 distracted driving citations, underscoring the dangers on the road during this busy travel time.
Troopers investigated a total of 333 crashes, resulting in 156 injuries and three fatalities reported by the Georgia State Patrol. An additional four fatalities were confirmed by other law enforcement agencies, bringing the total to seven. Notably, none of these fatalities occurred in Whitfield County, according to state reports.
The New Year’s holiday travel period remains one of the busiest for traffic enforcement, with enhanced patrols focusing on impaired driving, seatbelt compliance, and distracted driving violations.
As these developments unfold, residents are encouraged to stay informed about local gas prices and traffic safety as they navigate the new year. Share this news to keep your community updated!
