Federal Shutdown Forces Course Change for Golden Gate Half Marathon
URGENT UPDATE: The ongoing federal government shutdown is impacting the Golden Gate Half Marathon in San Francisco, forcing race organizers to modify the course just days before the event. This iconic race, scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 2023, will now avoid federally managed areas, including Fort Point.
As the race approaches, excitement is palpable among the 7,500 participants who have eagerly trained for this event. Carmen Gonzalez, who traveled from Mexico for her third Golden Gate Half Marathon, expressed her passion: “We start reading magazines that say, ‘San Francisco! The Golden Gate Bridge.’ It’s a childhood dream to run here.”
In a similar vein, Kayleigh Aquino, a new Berkeley resident and former collegiate cross-country athlete, is gearing up for her first half marathon. “I’m stoked! I could not be more excited,” she said. The race kicks off at 6:50 a.m. at Aquatic Park and spans 13.1 miles, concluding at Ghirardelli Square.
Despite the enthusiasm, last-minute changes to the race course mean it will not be certified by U.S. Track and Field officials this year, affecting participants who need qualifying times for larger competitions like the Boston Marathon. Organizers noted that certification impacts only about 5% of runners, with most participants focused on the experience rather than competitive times.
Gretchen Schoenstein of Golden State Challenge, the race organizer, stated, “We had to scramble over the past few days to plot out a new course with city officials.” The alterations mean that the course will bypass popular scenic spots usually featured in the race, but runners are undeterred.
Local participant Rakesh Sharma commented, “This is one of the races that I have always done. The course correction is fine. It doesn’t really bother me as much.”
As the Golden Gate Half Marathon approaches, the community buzzes with anticipation, showcasing the spirit of resilience amid governmental challenges. Stay tuned for updates as the race unfolds!
