Family of Father-to-Be Reacts as Girlfriend Charged with Homicide
UPDATE: The family of Daniel Waterman, a father-to-be who tragically died on October 8, 2025, is speaking out after his girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, was charged with vehicular homicide in connection to a harrowing crash that occurred earlier this year in Flagler County, Florida. Waterman’s family expressed their satisfaction with the charges filed against Mumby, emphasizing the need for justice.
Waterman, just 22 years old and originally from New York, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Mumby when the incident took place in February. He suffered severe injuries that left him in a coma, ultimately succumbing to his wounds months later. According to reports from FOX35 Orlando, Waterman managed to communicate with authorities from his hospital bed, alleging Mumby had intentionally caused the crash, stating, “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve.”
“Our family is deeply affected by this tragedy,” attorney John Hager, representing Waterman’s family, stated. “There are no real winners in this situation. It’s a terrible, horrible situation… the family is satisfied with how the State Attorney’s office in Flagler County has been working diligently.”
Mumby, aged 24, was initially arrested in July, facing charges of reckless driving and aggravated battery. With the upgrade of charges to vehicular homicide following Waterman’s death, she was booked into the Flagler County Jail, later released after posting a $150,000 bond.
Waterman’s mother shared with Syracuse.com that her son endured immense suffering, breaking multiple bones including his neck, back, and legs. His grandfather, Michael Gilman, described the extent of Waterman’s injuries, saying, “He broke everything. It wasn’t much, not broken.”
The emotional impact of this case extends beyond legal repercussions. An obituary highlighted Waterman’s anticipation of becoming a father to a baby girl, expressing that he “left this world far too soon following a tragic act of violence.” Friends and family recounted his love for basketball and his infectious energy, which left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Authorities from the Florida Highway Patrol are continuing their investigation, while the community mourns the loss of a promising young man whose life was tragically cut short. The next steps involve court proceedings against Mumby, with many watching closely to see how the legal system responds to this heartbreaking incident.
As updates unfold, the family urges the public to reflect on the consequences of reckless behavior on the road, emphasizing that “no one should have to endure such a painful loss.” The case continues to resonate deeply within the community and beyond, serving as a somber reminder of the fragility of life.
