Elon Musk’s Optimus Robot Malfunctions at Art Basel Miami Event
UPDATE: A Tesla event showcasing Elon Musk’s Optimus Robot took a hilarious turn over the weekend at Art Basel Miami. Footage from the December 2, 2023, event has gone viral, capturing a clumsy moment that raises questions about the true capabilities of the much-hyped robot.
The video, first shared on Reddit, shows the Optimus robot knocking over several bottles of water before dramatically lifting its arms, mimicking actions akin to removing a VR headset. Just moments later, the robot tips backward, going lifeless and crashing down. The clip, lasting only five seconds, ignited a wave of online speculation regarding the robot’s autonomy.
Many observers suspect that an unseen operator was controlling the Optimus, a practice known as teleoperation, which has existed since the 1940s. As one social media user quipped, “Musk will surely figure out how to deliver a billion robots by next year,” highlighting growing skepticism around Tesla’s robotic capabilities.
This is not the first time Musk’s Optimus has faced scrutiny. Earlier this year, a video purportedly demonstrating the robot folding laundry was questioned after viewers spotted what appeared to be a human hand assisting in the process. Critics have increasingly challenged Musk’s claims about the robot’s functionality, especially after a recent event in Los Angeles where Optimus robots were revealed to be teleoperated while serving drinks.
Tesla did not respond to inquiries about whether the Optimus at Art Basel was remotely operated. The viral mishap at an event titled “The Future of Autonomy Visualized” further fuels doubts about Tesla’s promises of fully autonomous robots.
Despite Musk’s ambitious projections, including the production of 1 million humanoid robots by 2030 and a vision for a billion robots by 2040, many remain skeptical. The ongoing questions about the robot’s capabilities raise concerns about Tesla’s future in the competitive robotics landscape, where companies like Figure are advancing faster in autonomy.
Another clip from the Miami event shows an Optimus robot awkwardly distributing water, struggling to set down a bottle when prompted. This further emphasizes the limitations in its operational capabilities, leaving event attendees disappointed and questioning the authenticity of Tesla’s claims.
As the tech community watches closely, the implications of these developments extend beyond just a viral mishap. With Musk’s vision for AI and robotics riding on the success of projects like Optimus and the anticipated Robotaxi service, the challenges faced at Art Basel may signal deeper issues within Tesla’s ambitious tech roadmap.
Next steps: Analysts and fans alike are eager to see how Tesla responds to this latest incident and whether it will affect the company’s credibility and future projects. The ongoing scrutiny is sure to keep the conversation alive, as both supporters and critics await Musk’s next move in the world of robotics.
