The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, which boasts 16GB of VRAM, was initially intended for gaming but encountered display issues, leading the owner to explore alternative uses. By utilizing PCIe pass-through to connect the GPU to the TrueNAS VM, the enthusiast can leverage the CUDA cores to handle demanding media tasks.
“This GPU may not show a display signal, but it can still perform crucial functions like transcoding for Jellyfin or processing CCTV feeds,” they stated. The flexibility of this approach offers significant energy savings, as lower-powered GPUs are ideal for transcoding while minimizing electricity costs.
The GPU’s capabilities extend beyond media streaming. It can also assist with various server tasks, such as image upscaling and running local AI models. For instance, integrating Qwen3 with SearXNG enhances the local AI’s functionality, providing access to the internet and up-to-date information, which significantly improves its performance against larger models like GPT-5.
The owner emphasized that just because a piece of hardware stops functioning in one area doesn’t mean it’s obsolete. “I thought my GPU’s gaming days were over, but it continues to thrive in a headless server environment, proving its worth in transcoding media streams and executing AI queries,” they explained.
