Chicago Appoints Mayda Alexandra del Valle as New Poet Laureate

BREAKING: Chicago has just announced that renowned poet and educator Mayda Alexandra del Valle will serve as the city’s new Poet Laureate, marking a significant moment for the literary community. This prestigious appointment, confirmed by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, comes as the city seeks to uplift its vibrant artistic voices.

Del Valle, a celebrated 47-year-old interdisciplinary artist born and raised on the city’s South Side, will step into her role on January 14, 2024. She will serve a two-year term, during which she will receive $70,000 to commission new works and develop initiatives that engage youth, students, and community members across Chicago.

This appointment not only emphasizes Chicago’s commitment to its cultural heritage but also positions Del Valle as a vital ambassador for the city’s literary scene. Her previous accolades include the publication of acclaimed works such as “A South Side Girl’s Guide to Love and Sex” and “The University of Hip-Hop.”

Del Valle’s career launched at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York, where she earned the title of Grand Slam Champion in 2001. She gained national recognition through her performances on HBO’s “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry” and as a writer and cast member of the Tony-Award winning “Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam” on Broadway.

Del Valle takes over from inaugural Poet Laureate avery r. Young, whose signature project, “Chicago Soul Poem: A City That Writes Together,” highlighted the city’s artistic collaborations over the summer. Chicago is among only 16 US cities with official Poet Laureates, according to a 2018 survey by the Academy of American Poets.
