Cargo Plane Crashes into Sea at Hong Kong Airport, 2 Dead
URGENT UPDATE: A devastating incident at Hong Kong International Airport has led to the deaths of two security officers after a Boeing 747 cargo plane skidded off the runway and plunged into the sea. The tragedy occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time on October 20, 2023, as the aircraft was landing.
According to the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, the cargo plane deviated from the North Runway and crashed into the water, colliding with a security patrol car stationed nearby. The collision pushed the vehicle into the sea, tragically resulting in the deaths of two officers who were inside. One officer was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second succumbed to injuries at a local hospital.
During a press conference, Steven Yiu Siu-Chung, Executive Director for Hong Kong’s airport operations, confirmed that the patrol car was situated at a safe distance from the runway before the accident. He emphasized that the vehicle was “outside the fences” and on a designated patrol route along the northern coast of the airport.
Four crew members aboard the cargo plane were rescued and transported to the hospital, with their conditions not yet disclosed. Emergency response efforts were extensive; a total of 213 firefighters and emergency aid officers were deployed, utilizing 45 vehicles and ships to manage the situation.
As of now, the North Runway remains closed while both the South and Center runways continue to operate normally. Airport officials confirmed that over 1,000 flights scheduled for that day will not be affected by the incident.
Early reports indicate that the cargo plane was arriving from Al Maktoum International Airport. Photos from the scene reveal extensive damage, with the aircraft’s body in pieces and the tail section separated from the fuselage.
In a statement, Emirates confirmed that the crew members are safe and that there was no cargo on board at the time of the crash. The incident is currently under investigation, and officials are working to determine the cause of this tragic accident.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops. The impact of this incident reverberates beyond the airport, affecting the local community and raising questions about safety protocols at major air travel hubs.
